Over 200 Participate in the 17th Annual Metro NY Charter School Career Fair

Earlier today, we welcomed over 200 candidates and recruiters at the 17th Annual Meto NY Charter School Career Fair. The event, produced by Charter School Jobs™, was held at Teachers College, Columbia University (“TC”). In addition to current TC students and alumni, over 100 certified classroom teachers from the general public came out to meet hiring managers from over 40 charter school organizations located mostly in the NYC area. However, we did have a couple of schools travel from as far away as Pittsburg, PA (Propel Schools) and Roslindale, MA (Brooke Charter Schools) searching for talented teachers.

This year we made the strategic decision to focus the event on classroom teachers. Whereas in previous years we recruited for all professional positions in a typical public charter school, (including pupil services, counseling, etc.), based on feedback from our client schools, we chose to limit admission this year to certified teachers and candidates enrolled in a an undergraduate or graduate teacher preparation program that leads to a teaching certificate. Based on conversations with employer schools at the conclusion of the fair, we are convinced this was the right decision. “Whatever you did differently this year, keep it up. We met several teaching candidates that we want to move on quickly” said Kristen Ahangari of Innovation Charter High School located in the East Harlem neighborhood in New York City.

“We really wanted to facilitate longer, more meaningful conversations between candidates and employer schools,” said Charter School Jobs CEO Kent Strong. “By prescreening all candidates to ensure they have the proper qualifications and limiting the candidate pool to teachers, we think we found a winning combination and our clients were happy so we are happy!” he added.
The competitions for certified teachers has reached a fever pitch in recent years. A multitude of factors including baby boomer retirements, sharp declines in teacher preparation program enrollment and a strong job market nationally are contributing to one of the most competitive teacher recruitment seasons in decades according to Mr. Strong.

It is an honor serving our charter school clients who work so very hard to provide an excellent education to kids who historically have not been well-served by the public school system. As it has for over a decade, the Metro NY Charter School Career Fair completely sold out of employer tables months before event day. Charter School Jobs™ Holds Final Career Fair of the 2017-18 School Year

Today we held our final career fair of the 2017-18 school-year, the NYC Charter School Jobs™ Fair at Harlem Children’s Zone in New York City. Over 200 candidates had the opportunity to meet recruitment representatives from 50 public charter school organizations (collectively representing over 150 individual schools). Demand from employer schools for certified classroom teachers was once again very strong. Due to continuing shortages in certain subjects such as Math and Science, Special Education and high school teachers in nearly all subjects, many schools still have job openings that continue to remain vacant for months.

When we first started doing career fairs in June at the end of the school-year back in 2014, many schools had completed their recruiting for the year. Now it’s totally different. We have sold out of employer tables for the past 3 years. The job market has improved dramatically for professional classroom teachers and as such many schools are forced to use long-term substitutes in core academic classes. “The teachers shortage is dire in certain subjects and there simply are not enough certified teachers to go around.” says K12connect CEO Kent Strong. The 15th Annual Metro NY Charter School Career Fair News Release

Charter School Jobs™ (CharterSchoolJobs.com) held the 15th Annual Metro NY Charter School Career Fair this afternoon at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City. Sixty public charter school organizations were recruiting certified classroom teachers (all subjects and grade-levels), instructional coordinators and leaders, and non-instructional school professionals. The event takes place between the hours of 1:00 pm and 3:30 pm.

The event is produced in partnership with the Office of Career Services at Teachers College. A mix of Teachers College students and alumni together with pre-screened candidates from the general public had the opportunity to meet face-to-face with hiring managers from a highly diverse group of public charter schools. Many of the school organizations attending manage multiple school locations, hence the recruiters at this fair actually represented 100s of charter schools in the Metro New York City region and beyond.

The Metro NY Charter School Career Fair is the premier job fair event for NYC charter schools. Employer tables have sold out completely every year for a decade. It is the longest-running charter school career fair event in the nation. As has been the case for the past several years, demand for certified teachers and instructional coordinators and leaders is very strong. The NYC Dept of Education has picked up its hiring and recruitment efforts in response to a job market that has grown extremely competitive. With the retirement of Baby Boomers and a dip in the number of graduates of teacher preparation programs across the country, “it’s a real dog-fight for talent these days” according to Mr. Strong. As usual, competition for Science, Math and Special Education teachers is very intense - particularly at the secondary level. “There simply are not enough STEM and Special Ed teachers to go around and people are scrambling to fill positions that often remain vacant for months” Strong says. “We don’t see it getting any better for a while and expect the Metro NY Charter School Career Fair will continue to be a highly successful event due to the very strong demand for qualified teachers for years to come.”

Over 40 public charter schools located in the New York City metropolitan area recruited certified K-12 teachers and other school professionals today at the 2017 CharterSchoolJobs.com NYC Winter Career Fair. Exhibiting schools came from across the City: 14 from Manhattan, 13 from Brooklyn, 12 from the Bronx, and 3 from Queens. The charter school sector continues to grow and competition for talented urban public school teachers intensifies every year. Certified Teachers Wanted at the Charter School Jobs™ Fair NYC on Saturday, June 4, 2016

On Saturday, June 4, 2016, over 50 public charter schools located in the New York City area will be recruiting certified K-12 classroom teachers in all grade levels and subjects at the Charter School Jobs™ Fair NYC - Spring 2016. The event will be held at Harlem Children’s Zone Promise Academy at 35 East 125th Street, New York, NY from 1:00 pm - 3:30 pm. A diverse mix of elementary, middle, and high schools with educational philosophies that run the spectrum from progressive to conservative will be looking for talented education professionals. If you are a certified middle grades or secondary teacher, particularly math, sciences or special needs, we strongly encourage you to join us as there is very strong demand for candidates with these credentials. Some schools will also be looking for instructional coaches, deans, APs, grade-level and subject heads, and other professionals. Very few schools attending are searching for pupil services candidates, so unfortunately we will approve only a small number of school counselor candidates to attend the fair. Many candidates ask about teacher salaries at charter schools. The answer like most things in the highly diverse world of charter schools is that it varies from one school to the next. However, in general, NYC area charter schools offer salaries to certified teachers that are slightly above the NYC Dept. of Education salary for similarly experienced educators. However, because most charter schools are not bound to collective bargaining agreements, they are free to be more creative and have more discretion in designing compensation packages. Competition for Talent Heats Up at the 13th Annual Metro NY Charter School Career Fair

(New York, NY) - The 13th annual Metro New York Charter School Career Fair was held earlier today at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City. Over 285 pre-screened candidates and representatives from 57 charter schools attended. Employer demand for talented teachers and other education professionals is very strong this hiring season. Many recruiters who attended the event spoke of increasing challenges in finding and hiring qualified teachers with Special Education, STEM and secondary education credentials.

Charter School Jobs CEO Kent Strong says “What started as small challenge of finding teachers in historically hard-to-fill positions has blossomed into a full-blown shortage in New York City and across the country.” Mr. Strong added that while the event has sold out employer tables every year for the since 2007, “This year we literally had charter school clients pleading to attend the event, but we were completely maxed out on the number of tables we could safely fit in the exhibit areas.”

Factors contributing to the growing shortage of teachers in New York City include a big increase in job opportunities at the NYC Dept. of Education, the recent expansion of Pre-K programs, a surge in Baby Boomer retirements and an increasingly stronger job market across the broader economy. Another big factor is that enrollment in teacher preparation programs is down sharply. Given these factors, Mr. Strong sees increasing competition for talented educators into the foreseeable future. “This isn’t going to get better any time soon given the huge declines in enrollment in teacher preparation programs across the country.”

First Annual Charter School Jobs™ Fair NYC - Winter 2015 Delivers Talent Early

(New York, NY) Anticipating strong demand for talent, we produced and hosted Charter School Jobs™ Fair NYC - Winter 2015 this weekend at the DoubleTree Metropolitan Hotel in Midtown New York City. Top Performing NYC Charter Schools Recruit Teaching Candidates at the 12th Annual Metro NY Charter School Career Fair

Today, on the campus of Teachers College, Columbia University, roughly 425 instructional professionals connected with 55 charter school organizations from the metropolitan New York City area and beyond. Over 90% of attending candidates were certified teachers or current Masters of Education students who will be certified by the beginning of the 2014-15 school-year. The event was sponsored by two of the top-performing charter school networks in the country: Success Academy Charter Schools and KIPP NYC. The event was produced in partnership with Teachers College, Office of Career Services.

Kent Strong, CEO of Charter School Jobs, Inc., says:

This year the career fair felt a lot like family coming together. It was a time to connect with highly qualified teaching candidates and reconnect with fellow charter school colleagues. It was especially personal for me, because this year for the first time, I am a proud charter school parent myself as my daughter is a new Kindergartner at Girls Prep LES. We (charters) were the only game in town for a few years, but that is now changing.” He expects the war for talent to continue to intensify as more and more charters enter the market looking for teachers.

Over 425 Candidates Attend the 11th Annual Metro NY Charter School Career Fair

New York, NY - Over 425 certified teachers and instructional leadership candidates attended the 11th Annual Metro NY Charter Career Fair at Teachers College, Columbia University on March 9, 2013. 53 charter school organizations from New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, DC and the state of New Jersey connected with a diverse group of pre-screened, certified teachers seeking new career opportunities.

As in previous years, there was strong demand from recruiters for teachers with urban teaching experience. The “start-up” nature of many charter schools, in most cases does not allow for new teachers without full-time teaching experience. Kent Strong, CEO of K12connect, Inc. (the parent company of event producer CharterSchoolJobs.com) said "We screened the resume of every candidate who attended the fair to weed out those without teaching experience."

Recruiters also expressed strong interest in finding candidates with a demonstrated track-record of delivering strong academic results teaching children in an urban school environment. Competition for Special Education, Math and Science teachers was very strong this year. With the movement toward adopting Common Core Standards, there was also strong demand for academic leadership candidates with a background in curriculum development.

We saw a lot of great candidates today and our charter school clients seem very pleased with quality of the teachers and other education professionals who attended. The fact that we had to reschedule due to the winter storm that hit the NYC area back in February, yet we still had such a strong turnout makes me really proud of my team and what they accomplished.

New York, NY - CharterSchoolJobs.com (a division of K12connect, Inc.) held the Metro NY Charter School Career Fair at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City on Saturday March 5, 2011. The event brought together over 500 pre-screened candidates looking for instructional and pupil services positions at charter schools in the New York area. Employer tables were completely sold out for 5th year in a row.

Despite a very weak job market for professional educators, charter schools across the country are expanding and hiring for a wide range of instructional and non-instructional positions. The explosive growth and increased media coverage of the charter market, coupled with budget cuts and hiring freezes at many traditional public school systems, meant candidate demand for admission to the career fair was extremely high.

According to K12connect CEO and founder Kent Strong, based on the very high turnout for last year’s event, the decision was made to require candidates to apply for admission and go through a screening process. Mr. Strong said that for the first time “We declined to admit over 300 candidates this year, because demand was so high.” Many employer representatives were pleased with the reduced number of candidates, because it made the event more manageable and productive.

NEW YORK CITY – CharterSchoolJobs.com once again produced the “must-attend” staff recruitment event for New York area charter schools. The 8^th Annual Metro NY Charter School Career Fair was held this Saturday February 27, 2010 at Teachers College, Columbia University. Despite a major snow-storm that closed all NYC Department of Education schools the day before the Career Fair, over 650 determined candidates and 120 school representatives braved the weather and made this year’s event the biggest and best ever.

According to K12connect, Inc (parent of CharterSchoolJobs.com) president Kent Strong:

“We were really sweating bullets Friday morning. With 2 feet of snow on the ground and all public charter schools closed due to the weather, we were seriously considering canceling the event. Much credit goes to our charter school customers and our co-host, Teachers College Office of Career Services, for providing feedback very quickly that helped us make the decision to move forward. In the end it all worked out and candidate turnout broke all records. We were especially pleased with the large number of Teachers College, Columbia University students and alumni (over 260) who attended the Fair.”

Back in 2003, when there were far fewer charter schools and many promising candidates did not even know what a charter school was, K12connect, Inc. Known then as the Northeast Regional Charter School Career Fair, we struggled to attract more than 20 schools and 200 candidates.
