Earlier today, we welcomed over 200 candidates and recruiters at the 17th Annual Meto NY Charter School Career Fair. The event, produced by Charter School Jobs™, was held at Teachers College, Columbia University (“TC”). In addition to current TC students and alumni, over 100 certified classroom teachers from the general public came out to meet hiring managers from over 40 charter school organizations located mostly in the NYC area. However, we did have a couple of schools travel from as far away as Pittsburg, PA (Propel Schools) and Roslindale, MA (Brooke Charter Schools) searching for talented teachers.

This year we made the strategic decision to focus the event on classroom teachers. Whereas in previous years we recruited for all professional positions in a typical public charter school, (including pupil services, counseling, etc.), based on feedback from our client schools, we chose to limit admission this year to certified teachers and candidates enrolled in a an undergraduate or graduate teacher preparation program that leads to a teaching certificate. Based on conversations with employer schools at the conclusion of the fair, we are convinced this was the right decision. “Whatever you did differently this year, keep it up. We met several teaching candidates that we want to move on quickly” said Kristen Ahangari of Innovation Charter High School located in the East Harlem neighborhood in New York City.

“We really wanted to facilitate longer, more meaningful conversations between candidates and employer schools,” said Charter School Jobs CEO Kent Strong. “By prescreening all candidates to ensure they have the proper qualifications and limiting the candidate pool to teachers, we think we found a winning combination and our clients were happy so we are happy!” he added.
The competitions for certified teachers has reached a fever pitch in recent years. A multitude of factors including baby boomer retirements, sharp declines in teacher preparation program enrollment and a strong job market nationally are contributing to one of the most competitive teacher recruitment seasons in decades according to Mr. Strong.

It is an honor serving our charter school clients who work so very hard to provide an excellent education to kids who historically have not been well-served by the public school system. As it has for over a decade, the Metro NY Charter School Career Fair completely sold out of employer tables months before event day. We are humbled and inspired by the continued confidence NYC area charter schools have shown in our business. We look forward to the continued success of our company and more importantly of our charter school clients.

Over 200 candidates had the opportunity to meet recruitment representatives from 50 public charter school organizations (collectively representing over 150 individual schools). Demand from employer schools for certified classroom teachers was once again very strong. Due to continuing shortages in certain subjects such as Math and Science, Special Education and high school teachers in nearly all subjects, many schools still have job openings that continue to remain vacant for months.

When we first started doing career fairs in June at the end of the school-year back in 2014, many schools had completed their recruiting for the year. Now it’s totally different. We have sold out of employer tables for the past 3 years. The job market has improved dramatically for professional classroom teachers and as such many schools are forced to use long-term substitutes in core academic classes. “The <g class="gr_ gr_19 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace" id="19" data-gr-id="19">teachers</g> shortage is dire in certain subjects and there simply are not enough certified teachers to go <g class="gr_ gr_21 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation multiReplace" id="21" data-gr-id="21">around.</g>” says K12connect CEO Kent Strong. (Charter School Jobs™ is a division of K12connect, Inc., New York, NY.)

We are thankful to Harlem Children’s Zone for graciously hosting the event and look forward to doing it again in June 2019.

Sixty public charter school organizations were recruiting certified classroom teachers (all subjects and grade-levels), instructional coordinators and leaders, and non-instructional school professionals. The event takes place between the hours of 1:00 pm and 3:30 pm.

The event is produced in partnership with the Office of Career Services at Teachers College. A mix of Teachers College students and alumni together with pre-screened candidates from the general public had the opportunity to meet face-to-face with hiring managers from a highly diverse group of public charter schools. Many of the school organizations attending manage multiple school locations, hence the recruiters at this fair actually represented 100s of charter schools in the Metro New York City region and beyond.

The Metro NY Charter School Career Fair is the premier job fair event for NYC charter schools. Employer tables have sold out completely every year for a decade. It is the longest-running charter school career fair event in the nation. K12connect (parent company of Charter School Jobs) CEO Kent Strong says “We have been at this for a long time and our success is built on a long history of attracting highly qualified teachers and other professional educators to this event.” He adds that “our relationship with Teachers College Career Services has been highly productive and beneficial for both of us - we get access to extremely talented and qualified students and alumni and they get access to hiring managers at many of the most successful K-12 public charter schools in the nation.”

As has been the case for the past several years, demand for certified teachers and instructional coordinators and leaders is very strong. The NYC Dept of Education has picked up its hiring and recruitment efforts in response to a job market that has grown extremely competitive. With the retirement of Baby Boomers and a dip in the number of graduates of teacher preparation programs across the country, “it’s a real dog-fight for talent these days” according to Mr. Strong. As usual, competition for Science, Math and Special Education teachers is very intense - particularly at the secondary level. “There simply are not enough STEM and Special Ed teachers to go around and people are scrambling to fill positions that often remain vacant for months” Strong says. “We don’t see it getting any better for a while and expect the Metro NY Charter School Career Fair will continue to be a highly successful event due to the very strong demand for qualified teachers for years to come.”

The complete list of schools attending the 15th Annual Metro NY Charter School Career Fair:

Exhibiting schools came from across the City: 14 from Manhattan, 13 from Brooklyn, 12 from the Bronx, and 3 from Queens. The charter school sector continues to grow and competition for talented urban public school teachers intensifies every year. According to K12connect (parent company of CharterSchoolJobs.com) CEO Kent Strong, “This event sold out of employer tables months ago, which is a strong testament to the demand for talent this year .” The number of teaching jobs that are going unfilled for long periods of time increases every year. “Retirement, strong competition from traditional NYC Dept. of Ed. public schools and a decline in enrollment in teacher prep programs has created the perfect storm for charter school recruiters,” says Mr. Strong.

To help the event run smoothly and maximize impact, CharterSchoolJobs.com collects and compiles job opportunity data from employers and is shared with attending candidates so they know what employer tables to visit. Demand for K-12, certified teachers at all grade levels was once again very strong this year. In particular, the following job opportunities experienced highest demand from the 43 charter schools at the event:

Special Education Teacher (all grades)

Secondary Math Teacher

Secondary Science Teacher

Middle School Teacher (all subjects)

Elementary Teacher

Director of Instruction

Reading Specialist

Candidates holding valid New York State teaching certificates had the opportunity to explore many different teacher job opportunities and speak directly with hiring managers at the career fair. According Mr. Strong, “The increased focus on serving special needs children within the charter school sector has caused a big spike in demand for special needs teachers in particular.” He goes on to add that NYC Dept of Education “has been aggressively recruiting teachers and seriously stepped up hiring over the past 3 years or so.” This highly competitive market for teachers is likely here to stay for a while.

This career fair is the first of 3 NYC career fairs that CharterSchoolJobs.com will host in 2017. On March 25, 2017 the company will host the 15th Annual Metro NY Charter School Career Fair at Teachers College, Columbia University and June 3, it will host the CharterSchoolJobs.com NYC Spring Career Fair at Harlem Children’s Zone Promise Academy II.

The CharterSchoolJobs.com NYC Winter Career Fair will be held Saturday, January 28, 2017, 1:00 PM - 3:30 PM, at the DoubleTree Metropolitan Hotel located at 569 Lexington Ave, New York, NY. Over 40 NYC metropolitan area public charter schools will be recruiting certified K-12 classroom teachers, senior school administrators and subject leaders, licensed pupil services professionals and nonprofit business managers. Candidates interested in attending the career fair should visit www.CharterSchoolJobs.com to register and obtain more information.

“Demand for talented certified secondary teachers and instructional leaders is as fierce as I have ever seen in the 15 years I have been in the recruitment business” said Kent Strong, Chief Executive Officer of CharterSchoolJobs.com, the producer of the event. Secondary science, math and special education ICT teachers are in particularly high demand. Mr. Strong added, “Here in New York City, the Dept. of Education has dramatically increased its hiring in recent years and charter schools compete directly for the same certified public school teachers.”

The number of public charter schools operating in New York City has grown from 99 in 2010 to 216 in the current 2016-17 school year. The number of students served has increased even faster from 38,746 in 2010 to 106,600 today -- over 10% of all students enrolled in public schools. This is primarily because most charters in the NYC area start with just one grade and expand 1 grade-level per year - so they keep expanding long after opening day.

Charter schools also need talented nonprofit business managers with expertise in operations, public relations, fundraising development, accounting, finance, information technology and data science. Many non-educators are not aware that there are many career opportunities for management professionals in the charter school sector. Mr. Strong said, “These schools, are entrepreneurial, dynamic and growing rapidly.”According to Strong, “Most charter schools are not bound by rigid collective bargaining agreements that hamstring school leaders who want to quickly promote highly talented individuals into leadership positions.” He added working in a charter school “is a fantastic opportunity to build a career and grow professionally much faster than in traditional public schools.”

The event will be held at Harlem Children’s Zone Promise Academy at 35 East 125th Street, New York, NY from 1:00 pm - 3:30 pm. A diverse mix of elementary, middle, and high schools with educational philosophies that run the spectrum from progressive to conservative will be looking for talented education professionals. If you are a certified middle grades or secondary teacher, particularly math, sciences or special needs, we strongly encourage you to join us as there is very strong demand for candidates with these credentials. Some schools will also be looking for instructional coaches, deans, APs, grade-level and subject heads, and other professionals. Very few schools attending are searching for pupil services candidates, so unfortunately we will approve only a small number of school counselor candidates to attend the fair. This event is primarily focused on classroom teachers and instructional management and leadership candidates.

Please note that candidates must pre-register on CharterSchoolJobs.com to to attend. Register now by clicking the button below:

Register Now

You will need to upload a copy of your resume for screening by Charter School Jobs™ staff in order to ensure that you are qualified for career opportunities at one or more of the attending charter schools.

At the career fair, you will have the opportunity to meet face-to-face with recruiters from over 50 public charter schools. Depending upon the size of the charter school organization, you may meet professional recruiters that are specialized in finding teachers and other instructional staff - usually from larger school networks. Individual charter schools (“community schools”) will often send their principal and/or other school leadership team members to the career fair, so you will be speaking directly with the person who will make the final decision on who is hired. It’s a great opportunity to cut through the (sometimes frustrating) application process and speak directly with people who make the hiring decisions at the school organization.
Many candidates ask about teacher salaries at charter schools. The answer like most things in the highly diverse world of charter schools is that it varies from one school to the next. However, in general, NYC area charter schools offer salaries to certified teachers that are slightly above the NYC Dept. of Education salary for similarly experienced educators. However, because most charter schools are not bound to collective bargaining agreements, they are free to be more creative and have more discretion in designing compensation packages. All charter schools attending the career fair offer health insurance and most offer retirement benefits as well for full-time employees. For those not familiar with charter schools, we have a brief overview of charter schools on our website.

Over 300 prescreened certified teachers, school leaders and non-instructional professionals attended the event along with representatives from 40 charter schools in the metropolitan New York area. All 40 employer tables sold out nearly a month before the event. Kent Strong, Charter School Jobs CEO says “Demand was so strong from charter school recruiters that we decided to add another career fair event next month on June 6th.”

Over 285 pre-screened candidates and representatives from 57 charter schools attended. Employer demand for talented teachers and other education professionals is very strong this hiring season. Many recruiters who attended the event spoke of increasing challenges in finding and hiring qualified teachers with Special Education, STEM and secondary education credentials.

Charter School Jobs CEO Kent Strong says “What started as small challenge of finding teachers in historically hard-to-fill positions has blossomed into a full-blown shortage in New York City and across the country.” Mr. Strong added that while the event has sold out employer tables every year for the since 2007, “This year we literally had charter school clients pleading to attend the event, but we were completely maxed out on the number of tables we could safely fit in the exhibit areas.”

Factors contributing to the growing shortage of teachers in New York City include a big increase in job opportunities at the NYC Dept. of Education, the recent expansion of Pre-K programs, a surge in Baby Boomer retirements and an increasingly stronger job market across the broader economy. Another big factor is that enrollment in teacher preparation programs is down sharply. Given these factors, Mr. Strong sees increasing competition for talented educators into the foreseeable future. “This isn’t going to get better any time soon given the huge declines in enrollment in teacher preparation programs across the country.”

The Metro NY Charter School Career Fair is produced and managed by Charter School Jobs, Inc. (a wholly owned subsidiary of K12connect, Inc.) in cooperation with Teachers College, Columbia University Office of Career Services. Success Academy Charter Schools was the exclusive Platinum Employer Sponsor. Over 225 prescreened certified teachers, non-instructional professionals, school leadership and business managers were given the opportunity to meet with 34 charter schools located in the Metropolitan New York City area.

Kent Strong, CEO of Charter School Jobs, Inc., said "A big increase in the competition for teaching, non-instructional and leadership talent has taken place over the last 12 months or so." Based on the long-term success of the Metro NY Charter School Career Fair (a Charter School Jobs, Inc. event that has been co-hosted and produced with Teachers College, Columbia University annually for the past 13 years) and the strong growth of new and expanding charter schools in the region, “we needed to expand the number of recruitment events in order to meet the growing needs of our charter school customers”, according to Mr. Strong.

Once again, Charter School Jobs is proud to have as our exclusive Platinum Employer Sponsor Success Academy Charter Schools. No pun intended, but Success has been extremely academically successful - boasting 2014 NYS standardized Math and ELA test scores better than 99 and 97 percent respectively of public schools in the entire state! Success Academy has participated in every career fair we have held in New York City since before it opened its first school in 2006.

Over 90% of attending candidates were certified teachers or current Masters of Education students who will be certified by the beginning of the 2014-15 school-year. The event was sponsored by two of the top-performing charter school networks in the country: Success Academy Charter Schools and KIPP NYC. The event was produced in partnership with Teachers College, Office of Career Services.

Kent Strong, CEO of Charter School Jobs, Inc., says:

This year the career fair felt a lot like family coming together. It was a time to connect with highly qualified teaching candidates and reconnect with fellow charter school colleagues. It was especially personal for me, because this year for the first time, I am a proud charter school parent myself as my daughter is a new Kindergartner at Girls Prep LES. I am thankful and blown away by the incredible hard-work and dedication of my charter school clients’ and now my own child’s teachers. I am honored that so many charter schools trust us to help them find the kind of wonderful teachers that are transforming the lives of so many children who would otherwise be forced to attend failing traditional public schools.

For the 8th year in a row, event tables sold out. Mr. Strong says finding great candidates is getting harder, because the job market for teachers is re-igniting. “With the NYC DOE now hiring new teachers in earnest again, qualified teaching candidates suddenly have more options. We (charters) were the only game in town for a few years, but that is now changing.” He expects the war for talent to continue to intensify as more and more charters enter the market looking for teachers.

About Charter School Jobs, Inc. - Charter School Jobs, Inc. is a subsidiary of K12connect, Inc. Since 2004, we have helped hundreds of charter schools and charter management organizations across the country recruit and hire the best candidates out there. We were the first and are the largest privately-owned staff recruitment service on the web serving the charter school industry. Our track record with many of the most academically successful charter schools is a testament to the quality of our candidates and customer service.

Over 425 Candidates Attend the 11th Annual Metro NY Charter School Career Fair

New York, NY - Over 425 certified teachers and instructional leadership candidates attended the 11th Annual Metro NY Charter Career Fair at Teachers College, Columbia University on March 9, 2013. 53 charter school organizations from New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, DC and the state of New Jersey connected with a diverse group of pre-screened, certified teachers seeking new career opportunities.

As in previous years, there was strong demand from recruiters for teachers with urban teaching experience. The “start-up” nature of many charter schools, in most cases does not allow for new teachers without full-time teaching experience. Kent Strong, CEO of K12connect, Inc. (the parent company of event producer CharterSchoolJobs.com) said "We screened the resume of every candidate who attended the fair to weed out those without teaching experience."

Recruiters also expressed strong interest in finding candidates with a demonstrated track-record of delivering strong academic results teaching children in an urban school environment. Competition for Special Education, Math and Science teachers was very strong this year. With the movement toward adopting Common Core Standards, there was also strong demand for academic leadership candidates with a background in curriculum development.

According to Mr. Strong:

We saw a lot of great candidates today and our charter school clients seem very pleased with quality of the teachers and other education professionals who attended. The fact that we had to reschedule due to the winter storm that hit the NYC area back in February, yet we still had such a strong turnout makes me really proud of my team and what they accomplished.

We are especially thankful for the support of our Platinum Sponsor Success Academy Charter Schools and Gold Sponsors Coney Island Prep and KIPP NYC. All 3 organizations were sponsors of last year’s event as well. It is truly an honor to serve these high-performing charter school organizations.

About the Metro NY Charter School Career Fair

Since 2003, the Metro NY Charter School Career Fair has been the signature recruitment event of K12connect's CharterSchoolJobs.com division. Employer tables have completely sold out for 7 years in a row and hundreds of charter school teachers and other education professionals currently working in New York City charter schools found their career opportunity through this career fair. Virtually all of the top performing charter schools in the New York area attend the event year after year. It continues to play a key role in building schools that are closing the achievement gap and literally changing the lives of children and families who would otherwise be stuck in underperforming, traditional public school.

Over 350 highly qualified, certified K-12 teachers and instructional leaders attended the event in search of career opportunities at 47 charter school organizations from the metro New York City area and beyond. The top performing charter schools in the New York area were well represented at the event.

We are especially grateful to our Platinum Sponsor Success Academy Charter Schools and Gold Sponsors Coney Island Prep and KIPP NYC. All 3 organizations are delivering high-quality instruction that produces significantly better ELA and Math scores than traditional public schools located nearby. We are proud they trust CharterSchoolJobs.com to deliver the very best candidates year after year.

"This year, schools at the fair were of course looking for math, science, special education and reading teachers. But I was a bit surprised by the number of schools looking for fine arts and music teachers", said Kent Strong, CEO & founder of K12connect, Inc, the parent company of CharterSchoolJobs.com. "We picked up on this trend early enough to go out and find more art and music teachers by analyzing the job opportunity data that registered schools entered into our career fair management system."

For the second year in a row, seasoned CharterSchoolJobs.com recruitment professionals screened candidates for experience, certification, and academic achievement before granting admission to the career fair. "It makes for a much more productive event when nearly every candidate you meet is academically accomplished and qualified for an opportunity at your school", said Mr. Strong. The event targeted certified teachers and instructional leaders.

Holds 9th Annual Metro NY Charter School Career Fair

New York, NY - CharterSchoolJobs.com (a division of K12connect, Inc.) held the Metro NY Charter School Career Fair at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City on Saturday March 5, 2011. The event brought together over 500 pre-screened candidates looking for instructional and pupil services positions at charter schools in the New York area. Employer tables were completely sold out for 5th year in a row.

Despite a very weak job market for professional educators, charter schools across the country are expanding and hiring for a wide range of instructional and non-instructional positions. The explosive growth and increased media coverage of the charter market, coupled with budget cuts and hiring freezes at many traditional public school systems, meant candidate demand for admission to the career fair was extremely high.

According to K12connect CEO and founder Kent Strong, based on the very high turnout for last year’s event, the decision was made to require candidates to apply for admission and go through a screening process. Mr. Strong said that for the first time “We declined to admit over 300 candidates this year, because demand was so high.” Many employer representatives were pleased with the reduced number of candidates, because it made the event more manageable and productive.

The Platinum Employer Sponsor of the 9th Annual Metro NY Charter School Career Fair was
Success Charter Network , one of the top-performing charter school management organizations in United States. “We are honored and humbled that such a highly acclaimed and successful charter management organization chose to be our lead sponsor this year.” He added, “Success Charter Network’s schools are at the very top of the list in terms of academic performance, not just in New York City, but across the entire state of New York."

The 8th Annual Metro NY Charter School Career Fair was held this Saturday February 27, 2010 at Teachers College, Columbia University. Despite a major snow-storm that closed all NYC Department of Education schools the day before the Career Fair, over 650 determined candidates and 120 school representatives braved the weather and made this year’s event the biggest and best ever.

According to K12connect, Inc (parent of CharterSchoolJobs.com) president Kent Strong:

“We were really sweating bullets Friday morning. With 2 feet of snow on the ground and all public charter schools closed due to the weather, we were seriously considering canceling the event. Much credit goes to our charter school customers and our co-host, Teachers College Office of Career Services, for providing feedback very quickly that helped us make the decision to move forward. In the end it all worked out and candidate turnout broke all records. We were especially pleased with the large number of Teachers College, Columbia University students and alumni (over 260) who attended the Fair.”

For the second year in a row, the KIPP NYC (www.KIPPNYC.org) was the Platinum Sponsor of the 8th Annual Metro NY Charter School Career Fair. “We are honored and grateful that a highly successful, renowned organization like KIPP NYC chose to spend precious recruitment dollars on our event” said Mr. Strong.

Back in 2003, when there were far fewer charter schools and many promising candidates did not even know what a charter school was, K12connect, Inc. (parent of CharterSchoolJobs.com) pioneered the first regional charter school career fair. Known then as the Northeast Regional Charter School Career Fair, we struggled to attract more than 20 schools and 200 candidates. Over the next 7 years, as the charter school movement grew in New York, the event evolved to focus more on the Metro NY area charter schools. From humble beginnings, the Metro NY Charter School Career Fair has grown to attract over 50 charter schools and over 650 candidates. We are proud to have contributed to the tremendous academic success of charters in New York City and beyond through our unique events like the Metro NY Charter School Career Fair and our premier web recruitment service www.CharterSchoolJobs.com.
